Founders:
The Lewis H. Latimer Society was founded by Leo and Ronald Robinson
when they learned that the black inventor Lewis H. Latimer came from
Chelsea where the brothers had lived all their lives, they were astounded.
Chelsea!? "We could not believe it," recalls Ron.
They had never heard of this extraordinary son of the city mentioned in
school. The two social workers decided other children in this small city
just north of Boston, especially African American children, needed to know
about the amazing scientist and other interesting black figures in Chelsea's
past.
So, in 1997, they founded the Lewis H. Latimer Society whose work would
be in the realms of culture, education, and history. They can count Leo
among the path makers. A current Councilor, and two-time candidate for
mayor, he was the first African American in 90 years to be
elected to office in Chelsea.
